Project Info

On 26 April 2013, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation awarded The Old Post Office™ the Marguerite Williams Award for Excellence in Restoration. This is the premier yearly award given for building restoration projects in Georgia.

This project was truly a collaboration between Owner, Architect, and Contractor. Owner Jeff Davis has a heart for restoration of older buildings. WM2A Architects were given access to original drawings and correspondence that aided in the restoration.

There were two particular challenges to this restoration effort.

First, a second floor courtroom had been added roughly twenty years after the original building had been completed. This courtroom was removed so that the two-story mail sorting room could be restored to its former size and shape.

Second, three trios of arch-top windows originally flooded the building with sunlight. The restoration project required replacing windows that had been removed and restoring the condition of the windows that remained in place.

The finished building includes many original lighting fixtures, mail boxes, and other items. The Owner also found other items of similar age, These were used in locations where the original items had been lost.
